MATV offers a wide range of media production courses available to members of the Malden community. Through the years, we have trained 8 year-olds and 80 year-old to produce their own TV programs! Our members produce in many languages and on a wide variety of subjects.  
During the training process, all our participants discover the power of the electronic media to mold and shape the form of the message delivered. In order to take the training workshops, you must become a member of MATV (see Membership Information).  

All members begin within a one evening orientation prior to taking any classes. The orientation provides a guided tour of the facilities, a history of access TV and MATV, an overview of our policies and procedures, and advice on how to effectively use the resources available.  

MATV members can become certified in portable video production by taking the four- part Intro to Video Production course. In the process of taking this course, members will produce a short "certification tape". Once the certification tape has been accepted, members can go on to produce programs to be shown on the appropriate channel. Members will be shown how to fill out a Program Proposal form (available only at the MATV facility). Once the Program Proposal is approved, members may book equipment according to the guidelines explained in the introductory course.  

In order to become certified in producing programs using the MATV television studios, members must take the appropriate course, either the four-part Introduction to Studio A or the one-evening Introduction to Studio B. It is recommended that class participants take the full Intro to Video Production course prior to taking the studio classes. Once certified producers have produced a program beyond their certification tape, it is recommended that they begin taking intermediate and advanced level workshops to hone their production skills.  

An ongoing Production Seminar class meets every three weeks and is open to all certified producers who are working on a program. The seminar class is intended to guide producers in the making of their programs from pre-production stage to edited program. Input and support from the instructor and the peer participants help producers attain a better finished product and improve their technical skills in the process. The viewing of pre-production materials, rough footage, and rough edits is an important aspect of the seminar class.

Learn all the necessary steps of portable video production so that you can make your own videos!  This four-part class covers basic use of a digital camcorder, shooting techniques, pre-production planning, audio basics, and digital editing (using the Macintosh-based iMovie software). During the course, class participants will work to produce their own 3-5 minute “certification tape” to be completed on their own time.  Upon successful completion of this tape, you will become a certified MATV Portable Video Producer.  You can then have free access to camera equipment and editing facilities to make your own programs for MATV. 

The Sony VX-2000 is a three-chip digital high-end camcorder that is available to anyone who has completed at least one program beyond the certification tape and has attended this training workshop.  This class details the operation of the camera and assumes you have already had experience in general shooting technique.

Final Cut Pro is a Macintosh-based software program used in professional television production and available to MATV producers on our G4 editing system in Edit Room 1.  This hands-on course for experienced editors provides an introduction to this powerful editing program. 

PREREQUISITE:  You must complete two programs beyond your basic certification in iMovie.

Learn how to make the most of Final Cut Pro using Soundtrack and LiveType.  In this class, you'll learn to compose your own music, create dazzling graphics, and enhance your editing experience with these creative and exciting programs.

Quiet on the set…and ACTION!  Learn the ins and outs of studio production in this six-part class that covers both the technical use of our state-of-the-art digital studio and the production planning needed to put together a studio-based program.  Students will learn all the various positions: camera, floor directing, audio, switching, tape tech, lighting, graphics, and directing.  In the last session, students will put together and shoot a program to be shown on the channel.  By attending all six sessions and assisting on two more studio productions, you will become certified as an MATV Studio Producer.

A class for recently certified producers or anyone who has an idea for a new program they would like to produce.  The class will provide an overview of the stages and types of pre-production planning, including treatments, storyboarding, scriptwriting, and narration.  The class will also provide an opportunity to share your ideas and develop your concept, even to show rough footage clips if you have already started working on your program.  The class will also point you towards all resources available at MATV that can be helpful to your production.

Blogging 101

What is a blog? How can I make one to augment my video program? Is it really free? Can I post audio and video to my blog? This introductory class will answer these questions and get you blogging in no time. There will be an assignment between the first and the second session, and then an opportunity to share blogs in the second session.  Must have basic computer skills.
