At the Annual Meeting on September 18, 2000, MATV honored outgoing Board members Richard Cheng, Christine Murphy, and Joe Mokler. We again thank them for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to this organization during their terms as Board members. Newly appointed to the Board are Bill Thomson and Charlene Johnson. Bill Thomson works as a senior computer consultant at an insurance firm and is co-host of the long running program series Malden Public Radio. Charlene Johnson is an Associate Professor at the First Church of Malden. She earned her bachelors degree in Mass Communication and has always had a particular interest in media as well as a passion for community service. She feels that MATV provides a wonderful service for the community and wants to be supportive of that effort.
Donna Spinelli was elected to the Board by the membership at the Annual Meeting. (There are three membership seats on the nine member Board of Directors. All terms are three years and membership seats are staggered so that one seat becomes available each year.) Donna has been a dedicated MATV member, producer, and volunteer since 1994. She has also served as a workshop instructor, teaching Intro to Computers, Basic Editing, and Scala Computer Graphics. Donna states, "By serving on the Board, I hope to give back to an organization which has given me so much."
Finally, Mohamed Ziani was
chosen by the Board to finish out the remaining term of the appointed seat
left open by Paul Solano who resigned from the Board. Mohammed is the Director
of the local immigrant rights organization Voices in Action. He
is also an active member at MATV and produces the video program series
Voices
in Action: The Show. Mohammed explains, "I joined the Board because
is a good opportunity for me to be part of a great community organization.
I plan to work with other community members to make sure that MATV is making
more progress day by day." Welcome to all of our new Board members!
COOKING ASHIANA STYLE
To many of the staff people at MATV, Salahuddin (Sal) Khan is known as the "food god". Over three years ago, he became a member of MATV and has since graced our facility with platters of delicious food for countless events and occasions. His monthly program entitled Ashiana Style Cooking is now in its third year of production and, through it, he has taught the community many secrets to making fabulous cuisine.
Sal comes originally from Pakistan and has also lived and worked in the Middle East for a number of years. He came to America in 1983 where he owned and operated a restaurant in Brooklyn, NY. He has worked at Masaba, a Middle Eastern restaurant in Brookline, and as a chef at Kebabish, a Pakistani restaurant in Cambridge. Retired from a regular full-time job, he now produces Ashiana Style Cooking. The program springs from his love of preparing and serving food, being creative, and involving other people in the art of cooking.
Ashiana (which means "home" in Persian) is an hour long program which features Sal himself, as well as many other guest cooks, preparing 8 – 10 meals in any one show. Programs have featured Middle Eastern, Italian, Chinese, Pakistani, and Indian foods, with Spanish, German, and Japanese cuisine soon to be presented. Featured guests have included people from our own MATV community: Francis Mattuchio, Olga Lattarulo, and Luis Martinez. Restaurant owners from in and around Malden have also been featured. If you are a good cook and would like to appear on Ashiana Style Cooking, contact Sal at 781-321-8189 or at ascooking@cs.com. All cooking styles are welcome, but Sal is particularly looking to feature Arabic and French cuisine. Ashiana Style Cooking airs on the first, third, and fifth Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm and on the first and third Saturday at 12:30 in the afternoon. Here’s a recipe that is well-loved by the MATV community.
SCALLION BURGERS
How do digital cameras work? How do you print a photograph onto a mouse pad? Malden High School multimedia students have the answers, and they give them to viewers on "MHS Multimedia," which will be cablecast several times this winter on MATV Channel 15 (check program schedule for dates and times).
Students from the two MHS multimedia classes came to the MATV studio to videotape their show on December 7. Although their destination was only a stroll across familiar Malden Square, this field trip introduced many of the students to a new world: television production.
The half-year multimedia class, taught by Beth Butter and Karen Razzino, exposes students to digital cameras, web design, HTML programming and more. While the medium of television is not covered specifically in the class, the MATV trip enhanced students’ related skills and gave them a chance to become tv producers for the local community.
Before the trip, Susan Lawrence, Senior Producer, Educational Access for MATV, visited MHS to give the students hands-on camera experience and describe the studio production roles.
In the studio, the students created two panel discussions about topics related to multimedia production. When not involved as talent, students got practice on the studio cameras and in the control room. Some students were able to try out the floor director’s role and the Scala graphics program.
The result of the students’ MATV experience is the half-hour show, "MHS Multimedia."
The multimedia class is a new Business Department offering at MHS. Future multimedia classes can also look forward to an MATV field trip.

"The Rikki Lake of Reading, Writing and ‘Rithmetic…" That’s what delighted and excited viewers have been calling Susan Lawrence since MATV launched a new monthly talk and variety show, Malden School Hour, this fall.
As Senior Producer, Educational Access, Susan is producing and hosting the program to showcase learning in the Malden schools. On Malden School Hour, a variety of guests—educators, students, administrators, parents--describe their roles in the many innovations underway in the Malden schools.
Guests on the premiere program were teacher Elaine McCarthy of the Forestdale International School’s Renaissance program, with four students; Angela Mah and Maryann Barry discussing anti-tobacco programs for youth; and Jennifer Clapp, drama teacher at MHS, with three actors from "As You Like It" who gave a performance in the studio.
The second program featured Superintendent of Schools Joan Connelly; a group of sixth graders from the Ferryway School with teacher Margaret Briatico; a math parent involvement program based at Beebe and Salemwood Schools; and student musicians from the Salemwood.
Malden School Hour segments often include a pre-taped roll-in that takes viewers inside the city’s classrooms, out on the road with extracurricular activities, and behind the scenes with school staff and parents. MATV needs volunteers to videotape at the schools and edit footage into roll-in tapes for Malden School Hour. Please e-mail schoolhour@matv.org if you are a certified producer looking for a volunteer opportunity. Students are especially welcome!!!
Malden School Hour is also looking to develop a permanent crew. The show is taped one Thursday afternoon a month. Available positions include switcher, graphics, camera, set-up and strike, and the very important role of greeter. The greeter welcomes arriving guests, and escorts groups in and out of the studio when it is their turn to be videotaped.
The first show’s crew included Jeff Hansell (director), Gary Luca and Terlonzo Amos (audio), Joshua Cheung (graphics), Luis Martinez (floor direction and camera), Kelly Brilliant (camera), Anna Pacheco (camera), June Morelli (tape tech) and Jean Falaise (tape tech). The set was designed and built by Susan Lawrence and Mark McSweeney.
Malden School Hour is on Channel 15 Mondays at 5:30 pm and Wednesdays at 8 pm.
The Hometown Video Festival is the largest video competition honoring the works of community access cable programs. Winners of this year's competition will be officially announced and honored at the Hometown Awards Ceremony at the Alliance for Community Media National Conference in Washington, D.C. to be held in July of 2001. Besides receiving a personalized engraved plaque, winning entries will receive national visibility through listings in the Alliance journal, the Community Media Review, and on the Alliance web site. There are over 35 categories from which to choose to enter your program. Judges will select a winner for each category. Awards are presented to creative programs that "address community needs, develop diverse community involvement, challenge conventional commercial television formats, and move viewers to experience television in a different way".
Many MATV-affiliated
producers have won awards or have placed as finalists over the years. The
MATV staff encourages you to submit your program this year and will pay
half of your entry fee. And, because MATV is a member of the Alliance for
Community, your entry fee is at the membership rate. The entry deadline
is February 16, 2001. Complete details about entering the Hometown
festival are posted on our hallway bulletin board, or you can access them
through the Alliance for Community Media homepage at www.alliancecm.org.
MATV will be holding an Informational Seminar about entering the
Hometown festival. All who are thinking about entering are invited to attend.
A compilation tape with winning entries from last year's Hometown festival
will be screened and general information will be provided. Staff will advise
you about preparing your particular tape submission and support materials
for Hometown entry. If you are planning to attend the seminar, please sign
up in advance with a staff person. Good luck, and happy producing !!!

had a show on MATV for years or if you’ve got your first one in the works.
Since there is so much programming on all 3 stations, we are strict about
these rules. Please read them, follow them and definitely let me know if
