Malden Access Television recently received national recognition in the spring issue of Community Media Review, the international magazine of the Alliance for Community Media. MATV's Executive Director Jeff Hansell, an editor of the journal, wrote a profile of MATV's Government Access Channel. It featured the comments of Mayor Richard Howard, volunteer member/producers Sonny Kelly and Mohammed Ziani, Board Member Cynthia Fiducia, and State Representative Chris Fallon. Feel free to pick up a copy of the article in the lobby.

Honorable Mention . . .

Congratulations to our own Susan Lawrence for receiving an award from the Malden Chamber of Commerce & Malden High School for her outstanding efforts supporting the School to Career Internship Program for 1999-2000.

And congratulations also goes to MATV's David Gallesich for being recognized by the Massachussetts Army National Guard for his outstanding production work on their programs appearing on Government Access Channel 16.

350^th Celebration Coverage Ends With A Bang!

By the time you read this newsletter, the yearlong 350^th Celebration of Malden’s History will have ended with the closing fireworks on June 18^th on the banks of the Malden River. And all year long, MATV has been there…bringing television coverage of a vast range of events: opening fireworks, parades, festivals, exhibits, concerts, stage performances, and a Gala Ball. We could not have done this without our steadfast and talented crew of volunteer producers who have hauled heavy equipment, operated cameras, directed, monitored audio levels, set up lights, interviewed, edited, and done all the work associated with television production. This wonderful celebration has been made richer through its thorough documentation on videotape, replayed on our channels for the whole community to enjoy and now to be archived for future generations to see. MATV producers should be proud of the work they put into documenting this celebration. Thank You and "Good Work"!

Do You Want To Be Elected?

This year's Annual Meeting and Election of Officers for the MATV Board of Directors will be held on September 18^th at 7 pm. If you or anyone you know is interested in running for a seat on the board please contact Jeff Hansell or Christine Murphy. A candidate nomination sheet will soon be posted.

Volunteers Needed for Facility Facelift

As usual, we will be using the summer months to clean, paint, and generally spruce up the facility. Most of the projects will take place during the week of August 21^st when the facility is closed to the public. We need volunteers to help paint, clean, and help with some repairs and maintenance for the facility. Please let us know if you are interested in helping out. Call Dee Jaye Tobin at 321-6400.

Avoid A Parking Ticket!

Just a reminder that parking regulations have changed on Pleasant Street. The on-street parking limit is now only ONE hour. This does not affect validation parking. MATV can validate up to two hours for any of the local parking lots.
 
 

Political Celebrity on Government Access

Massachussetts Speaker of the House Thomas Finneran is expected to visit our facility in mid-July to appear on the program Beacon Hill Perspective, hosted by State Representative Chris Fallon. Speaker Finneran will be speaking earlier that day at the Malden Chamber of Commerce Breakfast at Anthony’s Restaurant. The video program will air in late July and throughout August on MATV Channel 16. In August also look for the start of our Voter Information programming for Election 2000.

Alliance for Community Media National Conference

This summer, three staff members from MATV will be attending the National Conference of the Alliance for Community Media in Tucson, Arizona. Executive Director Jeff Hansell, Office Manager Lee Ann Small, and Volunteer Coordinator Dee Jaye Tobin will gather with hundreds of community access staff, board members, producers, government officials, cable regulators, and community media activists. Since MATV opened its doors in 1988, our staff has been present at both regional and national conferences of the Alliance for Community Media. Our presence has helped to keep our staff informed, educated, and well-networked in the world of community media.
 
 

Open Studio Celebrates Two Year Anniversary

Congratulations Open Studio on two successful years of production. Host/producer Dee Jaye Tobin would like to extend a very special thanks to all her guests, crew, audience members, and Open Studio viewers. Special thanks also to the MATV staff, Board of Directors, sponsors, and donators. Open Studio has been funded in part by a grant from the Malden Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachussetts Cultural Council, a state agency. Thanks to all and here’s to another successful year of production.

Volunteer Corner

Thanks to all our Task Volunteers for your help and time given to this organization. Special thanks to our newest volunteers Helen Bidgood, Maithy Tran, Yolanda Battle-Brock, Jane Phillips, and intern Debbie Fallas. Besides the need for volunteers to help with our "summer facelift" (see above), here are some current openings for task volunteers.

Upcoming Summer Events – CREW NEEDED

The 350^th Celebration may have ended but Malden continues to celebrate with annual events such as the St. Rocco’s Italian Festival in ??? and the Malden Irish Festival on Sunday, August 27^th. We need producers, crewpeople, and editors. Please sign up on the crew sign-up sheets on the hallway bulletin board. A reminder to check our hallway bulletin board and the Crew Sign Up Binder regularly for upcoming shoots that need crew. Hone your production skills, learn more skills on the job, meet new friends, and help "Build Community Through Media".

Media Production Workshop Instructors

MATV is seeking freelance instructors for media
production workshops. Most of our workshops for adults are taught on
weekday evenings. We are also seeking instructors for youth of all ages
for workshops taught during and after school hours, as well as Saturday
mornings. All instructors must attend an MATV orientation. A familiarity
and commitment to the goals and philosophy of community access television
is required.

The following are a list of workshops that are taught on a regular basis:
· Basic (Analog) Video Production
· Basic Studio Production
· Computer Graphics for Video using SCALA multimedia software
· Low Cost Set Design
· Advanced Lighting Techniques
· Intermediate Video Production

We welcome ideas for new workshops and seminar classes; for example those
with a special focus on audio recording, interviewing, hosting, producing,
and editing; or on structural forms such as experimental, documentary, or
narrative. We like to run workshops with innovative curricula for teaching
media literacy.
